The "JANDORR" HOME PAGE
This
is "Lotmead", literally part of a Meadow, which it was when we bought the
site in 1980. The house was built as a "self build" project and took nearly
two years to complete. In 1985 the four acre field "Lot Mead" became available
and we have gradually extended the garden which now totals just under
one acre.
This aerial picture, taken in 1988, shows how it was designed for easy, or rather fast, maintenance. At the time I was away during the week and it was a case of a ride on mower at the weekend and whatever could be grown in the time available. It also shows how open the site was (and still is), the, then, new pond and the vegetable patches to the rear.
We are in West Dorset, in a frost pocket and on heavy clay which stays
wet until very late in the season. But! We rarely have to water anything
during the summer and the land is productive without the use of artificial
fertilizers or pesticides in the vegetable garden.
The links below give a quick tour of the garden, a method of growing
parsnips on difficult ground and instructions for making pots out of newspaper
This shot taken in in the late evening in May 2010 shows the house extension and the garden very much as it was as it was in 1988. The green patch in the centre is a brassica net made from the net used by builders on scaffolding being readied to erect on the right hand side. And the pond has a leak!
