Biography of Larry Durbin

I am 63 years old, married, retired, and deeply interested in learning all I can about photography. My goal is to snap the shutter anytime I see a picture.

I am originally from Central Illinois. I retired from Caterpillar Inc. after 33 ½ years of employment. My last assignment there was hardware and software support for the multimedia development group specializing in computer-based training.

It was during that time that I became interested in photography. Part of our function as developers was to take pictures in the shop and elsewhere to be included as a part of the training. In 1994 my supervisor, at that time, encouraged me to join the Peoria Color Camera Club. That was one of the best things I have done in the process of learning photography. It was during that time that I was befriended by a gentleman named Gary Gresham. He told me right up front, that in critiquing my slides, he would always tell me what I needed to hear not necessarily what I would like to hear. That, in itself, was the best lesson I could have learned. He died in 1999 shortly after having a heart transplant. I will never forget the things this friend and his wife taught me.

I joined PSA about 3+ years ago, although I have competed in PSA salons for the past 6-7 years. I currently belong to 4 camera clubs in Arizona one of which is one of the best slide clubs in all of PSA, i.e. The Saguaro Camera Club of Mesa. Its membership is a virtual Who's Who of PSA with the likes of Nancy Sams APSA, Dr. Louis Romain EPSA FPSA, Shirley Rockwell APSA, Lynn Thompson, and John Maloney APSA.

My equipment of choice is Canon EOS. I have an EOS 3 body, an Elan IIE body, and a 10D digital body. My stock of lenses include: 17-40mm, 28-135mm, 75-300mm, 100-400mm, 170-500mm Sigma, 90mm Macro, and a 180mm Macro (my favorite). I have 1.4 and 2.0 extenders, many filters, extension tubes, strobes, etc. I should be able to take any kind of picture I desire. But I still have a lot to learn about how to accomplish that.

Only recently did I become interested in participating in digital competition. I have always loved doing things to help improve my photography. I am looking forward to participating in this group and hopefully you will enjoy having me as a member of the group.
