VEGETARIANISM

January

On Wednesday I wrote to Mr. McGowan, [Head of Vegetarian Society] in answer to his application for my subscription posted 8 months ago.

Mrs. Barnesley to spend an hour or two at his mothers; present: Miss Bridges, 2 Miss Mayburys, a deaf Miss Mathews and the Barnesleys; playing at cards interlarded with Miss Bridge's good humoured, laughing but somewhat broad and unreasonable attack on vegetarianism, of the principle of which she knew nothing.

Letter from Mr. McGowan Secy to the Vegetarian Society acknowledging my letter and explanation in regard to my subscription.

Finished my letter home last night, and also wrote to Mr. McGowan with subscription of 2/6 to the Vegetarian Society & offering to be their Local Secretary for this district.

Letter yesterday from Mr.McGowan acknowledging receipt of my subscription, and my volunteering for the Local Secretaryship for this district, which he has forwarded to the officers of the Society for their consideration.-

also from Wm. Barnesley with invitation to Vegetarian banquet to take place at his Hotel today.

February

Wrote in the evening long letter to Alfred Wood with news in general and preaching Vegetarianism.

April

Letter from Uncle Clepham from Stockton, where he had arrived safe & found all right;- & containing a lecture on Vegetarianism.

Received Vegetarian Report for last year in which I am astonished to find myself registered as Local Secretary for this district- an extensive scene of labour containing two members- myself and a crazy bootmaker.

July

Long letter from Aunt Jane this morning having her views as to Miss Smith & her conduct when with them, which she looks very disparagingly on; & on my vegetarianism with quiet, feeling remarks on it.

Wrote an 8 page letter to Aunt Jane last night to thank her for hers; with my views on vegetarianism & on Miss Smith in defence - at length;

Wrote to Mr. & Mrs. Barnesley as to Lemonade receipt, duties of Vegetarian Local Secy (I being one), the Banquet when & where? & my visits to Manchester
letter also from Mrs. Barnesley in reply to my last explaining the disputed point of the lemonade receipt & saying the Vegetarian banquet will come off in L'Pool next month so I may manage to get over then & see Lindsay then;

November

Mr Allen's is a very comfortable house, Mrs. Allen his Mother a good caterer, tho my vegetarianism caused her the Barmaid (Miss Crookes) no little alarm.
December

they had had a good laugh a Punch's, clever sketch (by Leed) of Prize Vegetarians. Mr. Saunders was talking on Saturday about it too; but a true cause is too hearty not to laugh with those who laugh at it.

Mr called today, the only Vegetarian in Worcester except myself, to have his name removed from the Socy. which I was only too pleased to do; he not being a "prize" one.
