NEWS FROM THE BANDROOM

Chairman's Address

Where has this year gone, where has it gone indeed! It literally seems a short time only when we were leading up to the Christmas Season of 2006 and now we are nearing the end of 2007.

The year got off to a great start with Fiona Bishop, our new Musical Director and an extremely talented and qualified musician. Due to relocation Fiona's tenure was regrettably short and now we are in the very capable hands of Wilbur Paley who has taken the baton to become our new Musical Director. His style is radical and he works strategically towards the commensurate improvements necessary to further the band's quality objectives. We wish him every success and support his efforts wholeheartedly.

Our mission this year has been to increase the profile of the band in the community and your committee continues to work ambitiously towards that objective. Ron Powell has relinquished his position as Band Secretary this year and we are eternally indebted to him for his dedication, loyalty and service to Haworth Band. Thank you Ron from everyone, you are one in a million. Brian Cleaver has adopted the role of Band Secretary in addition to his role as Band Engagements Secretary. He is doing a sterling job and we are indeed grateful to him for becoming so actively involved in running the band's activities.

It is with profound sadness that we have lost John Hodgson this year to an illness which eventually took his life on the 21st September 2007. He shall be remembered for the many years he spent at Haworth to which he referred with great affection. A wonderful caring man, an accomplished musician, a great friend, Christian and gentleman.

And finally it is my great pleasure to introduce Frank Morris who has so graciously accepted the appointment of President of Haworth Band. Frank needs no introduction and we are delighted to welcome Frank into our fellowship for the benefit of the community which we serve.

My very best regards to you all,

Graham Richardson

Chairman

Meet our Musical Director

Wilbur has been a brass player for around 54 years and has played at Championship level with both Skipton Brass and Haworth Band. For many years he was a teacher at Ermysted's Grammar School in Skipton, teaching English, PE and taking pupils for brass lessons. He single-handedly built up a junior band which fed in to Skipton Brass and led to a stream of good young players in the Band. Married to Carole, who plays principal euphonium, Wilbur is still a top-class active cornet and trumpet player and contributes to the local U3A orchestra. Two of their daughters are also players in Haworth Band and a third is learning the cornet.

AUTUMN CONCERT A GREAT SUCCESS

The Autumn concert held in Haworth Parish Church was a resounding success. The Band played many well-known pieces, such as 'Born Free', 'I Dreamed a Dream' and 'Clog Dance' interspersed with solos from the Principal cornet and euphonium, and rousing marches. Special guest, Christine Quirk - mezzo soprano - entertained the audience to a series of 'Songs from the Shows' and astounded many with her magnificent voice. The Band have already engaged Christine for the Christmas concert on 15th December.

NEW PRESIDENT ANNOUNCED

The Committee were delighted when Frank Morris, former Principal Euphonium with The Band, accepted an invitation to become the President. Frank has had a long and distinguished career as a player and has said he hopes to be an active President. He is an excellent figurehead and example to all the players, as well as being a personal friend to many. Welcome, Frank!
