FENA C Umpiring Award

There are two components for the FENA C Umpire Award, a written test and a practical assessment. The written paper comprises 20 questions that require either a YES or a NO answer. The test has a 30-minute time limit and candidates should achieve at least an 85% pass rate (ie correctly answer 17 of the 20 questions).

The All England Netball Association has approved the use of a second sample paper, a copy of which follows.

  1. Is the Umpire expected to deal with any appeal against their decision during play?
  2. After awarding a Throw In anywhere on the Side Line, should the same Umpire also deal with any infringements by a defending player on Court that interferes with the Throw In?
  3. If a ball is knocked out of Court as the Umpire stops play for an injury not caused by contact, should play re-start with a Throw In?
  4. 4. Is a Wing Attack who runs across the shooting circle deemed to be offside even if the ball is held by the Centre in the Centre Court?
  5. If a GS and her opponent GK catch the ball simultaneously as they simultaneously go offside into the Centre Third, should a Toss Up be taken between two other players in the Centre Third?
  6. Should a Throw In be awarded against the player whose pass hits the Goal Post and rebounds back onto Court?
  7. Two opposing players catch the ball simultaneously and one lands out of court. Should the Umpire take a Toss Up on Court?
  8. Is it the responsibility of the Umpire to check that players are onside before blowing their whistle for the Start of Play?
  9. If the ball from a Centre Pass goes untouched over the Side Line bounding the Centre Third, is a Throw In awarded to the opposing team where the ball crossed the line?
  10. May a player roll the ball a short distance to another player?
  11. May a player tip the ball several times in an uncontrolled manner then bat it in a controlled manner to catch it herself?
  12. May a player catch the ball while on one foot, then step with the other foot in any direction, lift the landing foot and throw the ball before this foot is re-grounded?
  13. A GS catches the ball while well balanced on one foot, then deliberately takes a long second step towards the post to shoot. Is this allowed?
  14. Is extra time allowed to complete a Penalty Shot if the whistle is blown for "time" after a Penalty Pass or Shot has been awarded to GS or GA in the Goal Circle?
  15. Is it true to say that the Umpire should only start to check 3 seconds from the moment a shooter is ready to take a shot for goal?
  16. In attempting to intercept, may a defending player who is at the correct distance step towards a player with the ball?
  17. An attacking player who is standing within 0.9m (3 ft) of her opponent without the ball, keeps one arm raised sideways to indicate where she wants to receive the pass. Is the attacking player obstructing?
  18. In an effort to get free, is a player allowed to push, trip, hold or lean on an opponent in any way?
  19. Two players contact each other as they jump to catch the ball, which has been thrown by a red team player. Should the red team be awarded a Penalty Pass?
  20. If a red team player passes the ball at a Throw In and it travels out again on the opposite side of the court, is the Throw In taken by an opponent close to the original point?
