JAMES I
"JAMES I, king of England (b.1566-d.1625). The son of Mary Queen of Scots,
he succeeded to Scottish throne on her abdication in 1569, as James VI. On
the death of Elizabeth {I} in 1603 he became king of England. At the
beginning of his reign he found himself in conflict with both Catholics
(whom he obliged to take an oath of allegiance renouncing their loyalty to
the pope) and Puritans (whose attack on Episcopal Church government he
resisted). He wrote on theology and essays on various other polemical
sbjects."
