also be traced to Rabbi Akiba (2nd century CE)
- Peshat (the straightforward, literal reading)
- Daras (the elaborate interpretation)
- Remez ('pointer', 'sign', leading to a more practical and moral interpretation)
- Sod ('mystery', resulting in the most ambiguous reading of all, because it concerned
ultimate truths about human existance)
