The Old Croydonians Association

For anyone who went to Selhurst Grammar School in Croydon, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the OCA is still in existence and membership is at an all time high. It has remained above 600 members (602 in the June 2011 edition of the Magazine including 164 from the SGSfG) so things seem to be going OK. The bad news is that in reality very few have joined out of the potential membership and consequently news and information is lacking about the majority of them.

Which is a sad thing in a way, since at recent reunions, the most frequently asked question was, "Whatever happened to so and so - I saw them n years ago, but heard nothing since". Indeed the most frequent topic in the current e-mails seems to be ....... "and where are they now?"

These questions are also raised in most issues of the OCA magazine. There are many extracts from letters asking for news of their contemporaries as well as providing a potted history since leaving school. So there is a great interest in finding out what has happened to old friends and there are now plenty of opportunities to do so.

But as you have just found this site, why not get in touch now? More details on the official Croydonian website HERE which will keep you in the picture about the Association. It has plenty of information about the Schools (both) and the Association.

You can also join the Croydonian listing hosted by Yahoogroups. This has been going for many years and there are over 9,900 messages stored in the archive. So new members joining the current 186 can see what old chestnuts have been sent around and around and around......Nearly ten thousand messages - it's unbelievable!

It seems that in most years the school had someone who closely resembled this individual - perhaps you can put a name to him?

If you can't remember him then I have been putting together some pages to help those who have forgotten who was in their class. I already have a list of those who entered in that vintage year, 1943.

You may find these other lists (as yet incomplete) of interest.

Also here are some extracts from the Calendar for 1949-50. Why not take a closer look?

The Boys' School Calendar for 1947 has been scanned and is featured in the April 2006 magazine.

Incidentally, you may want to join Friends Reunited. Yes, at the last count there were about 1000 past pupils from SGSfB who had joined, but why stick to emails when you can be a member of the OCA?

Do you remember the School Song?
Here is something that might help you to remember it without the need to brush up your Latin.

If you have any queries on the above or you just want to find out more, please e-mail me putting "Croydonian" in the subject line, so that your e-mail does not get thrown out with the spam.

The latest issue of the magazine 'The Old Croydonian' went out in June 2011. With 68 pages of articles (comments on the previous edition as well as lots of new stuff), photographs (the Girls' are in again) and much, much more. It really is a good read. See if you can identify the missing names on the selection of photographs from the 1950's.
However, it's not all good news - after the Committee considered in detail a number of options concerning the publication of the Magazine, it has been decided that a charge should be made for each issue and that the frequency of publication reduced to once per year. A charge of £3.50 per issue or £10 for three editions will be made from the June 2011 issue.

Steve Palmer, the Newsletter Editor, says that if your submitted article did not make it into this latest edition, it should make it into the next. He has been overwhelmed with stories, photographs and memorabilia. But he is still wanting more articles, so now is the time to start writing. Always a good start for those who have not been in touch before is to write a short letter or even email him to let us know what you have been up to.

Did you miss this year's event to celebrate the Centenary of the Old Croydonians' Association on Saturday, 2nd July 2011, in the BRIT school? This was an exhibition comprising memorabilia from both old Schools, with many photographs and other interesting documents to take you back to your schooldays. It was well attended and provided many with the opportunity to meet up with those of their year that they had not seen for a long time.
The new OCA Centenary Booklet was on sale and with many extracts from past school magazines and all sorts of items about both schools and pupils, it is a good permanent reminder of the past.

Latest News

A short newsletter has now been sent out to all OCA Members and includes a copy of the Agenda for the AGM arranged for Saturday, 15th October, 2011, but at the earlier time of 11.00 am, in the BRIT School. The Committee are still looking for a Secretary, so why not come along and volunteer?
