While researching the family name of Boughton, I have come across a large number of references, data sources and articles that may be of use to those researching the same name. However it may also be of some interest to others researching their own family history and while not interested in the Boughton surname could benefit from following some of the steps indicated.
It would seem to be of value to provide this information as a series of linked web pages wherever possible, so as to make the information available world-wide.
Certainly there are families with the same surname in the U.S.A., Ireland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand as well as in the U.K. So it may be of more than passing interest to some who surf the Net.
Whether all these Boughtons have a common root remains to be determined, but I hope that these pages will result in an interest in the name. Certainly if you share the name, why not e-mail me as the first step towards finding this out. Already 88 Boughtons have been in touch since I first put these pages on the internet, (37 in the USA, 4 in Canada, 2 in Ireland, 8 in Australia, 2 in Mexico, 1 in New Zealand, 1 in South Africa, 1 in Brazil and 32 in the UK by the 3rd May 2010). I now suspect that I am related to at least 4 of them (by going back 8 generations) so it does show how useful it is to have a presence on Family History Society interest web pages, or subscribing to genealogy mailing lists, as well as getting listed on as many search engines as you can.
Some of the interesting links seem to be those families who moved from Pulham St. Mary to Bury St. Edmunds in the 19th
Century. But I have yet to find out if there were moves from Pulham to Stamford, Lincoln, Peterborough, Ipswich and London
in earlier times since records show that Boughton families were in these places.
