Writing competition - February 2002 - Entry D

Waiting

At birth
I kept my Mother waiting
Forceps first
Doctors waiting

At school I was always late
For the teachers - waiting.
For my exams
I arrived late, no-one waiting

At my marriage
The stag-night was late – overslept
Arrived late
Wife not waiting

Girlfriend pregnant
But the child came early
I was abroad
Came back too late

Got a job
To suit my skills
Junior waiter
Waiting, waiting

Now I’m retired
Cancerous growth
I wait for time
Waiting, waiting.
