Classical
I have been a fan of classical music since I was 10 and I am still
discovering new pieces. My "Desert Island" selection is
- Janacek - Sinfionetta (Vienna Phil & Mackerras on Decca)
- Britten - Sea Interludes from "Peter Grimes" (New York Phil &
Bernstein on Sony)
- Sibelius - Symphony No 5 (Vienna Phil & Maazel on Decca)
- Dvorak - Symphony No 9 "From the New World" (London SO & Simon on
Boots Classical)
- Tchaikovsky - Symphony No 4 (Vienna Phil & Abbado on DG)
- Britten - Simple Symphony (English Chamber Orch & Britten on London)
- Vaughan Williams - Symphony No 5 (Royal Phil & Previn on Telarc)
- Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis (ditto)
- Elgar - Introduction and Allegro for Strings (E.C.O & Britten on London)
- Delius - Brigg Fair (Halle & Handley on EMI)
- Copland - Appalachian Spring (St Louis SO & Slatkin on HMV)
(Ooops! too many! Never mind - the list will be different next time I
think about it anyway.)
Jazz
Hard to pick pieces here as I select by artist - here goes:
- Oscar Peterson
- Duke Ellington
- Lionel Hampton
- Dave Brubeck
- Count Basie
- Modern Jazz Quartet
- Miles Davis
- Quincy Jones
- and many more.
Other stuff
I like selected performers from other categories - and some of these are
hard to categorise. The "best" albums listed are not the only ones to
listen to!
- Renaissance - Ashes are Burning
- Janis Ian - Night Rains
- Clannad - Macalla
- Rickie Lee Jones - Rickie Lee Jones
- Maire Brennan - Maire
- Vangelis - Heaven and Hell
- The Barely Works - Don't mind walking
- Maddy Prior - Changing Winds
- Steeleye Span - Sails of Silver
- Tomita - Snowflakes are Dancing
and all sorts of others.
