The team broke into three groups of four. We had devotions in our
small groups, before travelling to Eastleigh, an area of Nairobi where
many Somali refugees live. We visited a school for the refugees, run on a shoestring by
Christians. Theyve acquired funding to expand the building, which is nearing
completion, allowing them to open an adult training centre as well. Their teaching
resources are practically non-existent. They have no textbooks, but we did see a badly
photocopied English language textbook in the headmasters office. It was copied from
an American Christian mission school, and contained those common English verbs "to
backslide" and "to be a pagan". |
After returning to the Sheepfold Centre for lunch, we had a little
free time before sanding and painting some of their doors. We then paid our first visit to
SCREAM (Street Children, Reconciliation, Education and Assistance Ministry see separate
sheet for details) with a shy, quiet, clean-shaven young Kenyan called Tom. There were
about a dozen boys from the street there, many others were still at school. Steve, who
started the work, gave his testimony and told us the history of SCREAM. Dinner at the
centre consisted of chapattis, lentils and spinach, with bananas to finish. We worshipped
together with some of the Sheepfold staff again, including 2 songs in Swahili. Without
warning, I was asked to share a thought from Scripture. I spoke on the first four
beatitudes. |
