Our last full day in Garsen began with the now familiar ‘up early, "Rich Christians…", boiled egg and bread’ routine. I spent some time talking to Asaph, who worked at the ‘Y’ and had sold us crate-loads of Fanta and bottled water during our time there. He was curious about who we were and why we were there.
We continued ‘mudding’, the ‘sticking’ being virtually finished. Mud 4.jpg (326748 bytes)The occasional mud-throwing of the previous two days, largely instigated by Tom, ended in an all-out mud fight. We had temporarily run out of water and so came to a natural lull in the work. It was clearly a good release of tension, but the final release came a little later as Tom lay on the ground while the team returned the mud he had thrown at them. (It would perhaps be stretching the truth a little too far to say he had lain down voluntarily.)
After lunch at Baba Jesse’s, we all returned to the building site for a celebration of the week’s achievements. The Transform Team and Tom wereTana Crocs.jpg (184801 bytes) joined, as they had been at various times throughout the week, by the Masai’s (Baba Jesse’s family), Evelyn and Pastor Alfred. We said our goodbyes, sang and drank soda together, before heading to the Tana River one last time, in the hope of seeing crocodiles or hippos. As the birds at the Giraffe Centre and the animals on the plain near the Sheepfold Centre, they were nowhere to be seen. We had seen some bushes that could have been animals, and some sticks that could have been crocs or hippos, but we were glad that we still had the safari to look forward to.
Back at the YWCA, we had our last dinner of rice, meat, bone, etc. The team met together, talked and prayed, while Tom and I worked out the costs with the staff at the ‘Y’.
