WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

It is an altered state of awareness, where you become both mentally and physically relaxed and therefore more responsive to suggestion. The best way of describing it to someone who has not been hypnotised is to compare it to the drowsy state just before you fall asleep. When you are in this state, you will often hear a question if it is asked, but you feel too sleepy to answer. Hypnosis feels very similar and though the hypnotic experience is unique to each individual, nearly everyone perceives a heightened state of relaxation.

CAN THE THERAPIST MAKE ME DO THINGS AGAINST MY WILL?

No. Hypnosis requires the full cooperation of the client. If anything suggested to you is against your own moral or ethical codes, you will consciously reject the suggestion and come out of hypnosis.

WILL I BECOME STUCK UNDER HYPNOSIS?

No. Usually, you come out of the hypnotic state when the therapist counts you out. However, even if the Hypnotherapist was to die during the hypnosis, all that would happen is that you would drift into a natural sleep from which you would awaken of your own accord.

WILL I REVEAL THINGS I WISH TO KEEP SECRET DURING HYPNOSIS?

No. You are in control and will only reveal what you wish the therapist to know. However, it is up to the therapist to create an environment where there is true empathy and the client feels totally safe to address his or her problems.

WHO CAN BE HYPNOTISED?

Since the total cooperation of the client is required, everyone who desires to be hypnotised can enter the state of hypnosis.

IS IT DANGEROUS?

No. Hypnosis is perfectly safe. However, there are certain medical conditions that makes it risky for some clients. Those suffering from Schizophrenia, Epilepsy, or any other form of mental illness should not be hypnotised.

WHY IS THE CONSULTATION A NECESSARY PART OF THE THERAPY?

In order for any therapy to work there must be empathy between the client and the therapist. Also as mentioned above, there are certain conditions that are contra-indicatory to hypnosis and these need to be identified to ensure that the hypnosis is safe. Furthermore, the consultation allows the therapist to assess the problem more thoroughly and permits the client to ask the therapist any questions relating to the treatment.

1. IN ELIMINATING LONG STANDING HABITS

Smoking, nail biting, weight loss, and bed wetting.

2. IN SOCIAL SITUATIONS WHERE THERE IS A LACK OF CONFIDENCE OR A PHOBIA.

Fear of flying, spiders, heights, driving confidence, examination/interview nerves, self esteem, public speaking, panic attacks and general stress.

3. IN PAIN MANAGEMENT AND PHYSICAL ILLNESS AGGRAVATED BY ANXIETY AND STRESS

Asthma, Eczema, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, infertility, breast enlargement, blushing, restless legs, eating disorders, insomnia.

4. RELATIONSHIP DIFFICULTIES.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Total confidentiality is guaranteed. Since the majority of my clients are recommendations and I often see members of the same family of friends, it is imperative that strict confidentiality is maintained. Confidentiality is important enough for all notes bearing client's personal details to be shredded prior to being put in the dustbin.
