Surrounding area
Walking - The Red Lion stands on the edge of the largest wilderness area left in England and Wales and offers fantastic opportunities for trekking, either long or short distances with the added advantage of being relatively undiscovered so guaranteeing freedom from the masses of tourists found in other better known areas. From the back of the pub a paths lead up to Abergwesyn Common and hence a huge area of open mountain and heath land stretching right across to the West Wales Coast, where the clear waters are home to resident families of dolphins. Close at hand are the magnificent Brecon Beacons offering some fantastic views and rugged, testing terrain in some of the highest and spectacular mountains in Wales. Also close the beautiful river Wye or the spectacular Elan and Abergwseyn Valleys The area is home to the soaring Red Kite and Buzzard two of the largest birds of prey in Britain. As mentioned earlier the spectacular West Coast of Wales is close at hand (only 50 minutes away) which is dotted with beautiful bays and wide expanses of beach, where the water is clean enough to count the resident dolphins which reside there. Tim's Courses - Just up the lane is Greenwood Chairs run by Tim Wade. Tim is a world acclaimed craftsman specializing in traditional wooden crafts from Coracle making to pole lathes. The former is a traditional Welsh boat, favorite of poacher's in days of old, the latter a lathe made by bending saplings and using their springiness to turn the lathe. Tim offers courses in these skills and many more traditional crafts Camra Listed - The Red Lion is also listed by CAMRA - The Campaign For Real Ale - as one of the most interesting and special pub interiors in Britain. Another example of the good taste of beer drinkers.
