As Christmas Day and New Year were on Mondays we could take
Two Saturdays and Sundays to add to the annual break;
This made the week extended and increased the sense of shock
When on January 2nd rang the early alarm clock.
There were those poor, sad unfortunates who went back in between
And found the dark was added to by frosts extremely keen;
But those who had the whole week off rejoiced and felt great thanks
They didn't work in shops, on farms, or offices and banks.
Some local shops reopening really wondered what to do
With shopper hibernating not the slightest rush or queue;
With curtains drawn 'til ten o'clock and getting dark by four
Compared with earlier in the month the trade was really poor.
Then as the New Year came and went normality returned again -
Adults to work, the kids at school, no snow, no frost - but rain.
At least the germs and bugs were killed and though it had been cold,
The frost all glistening on each twig - so wonderful to behold.
Things may go wrong, plans can break down not getting as we give -
But still its an attractive part of Leicestershire where we live.
