The above 2 views are from where the canal passes through the flood defences
downstream of the canal port - this is the Trent flooding the canal downstream
of the village. i.e. the flow at this time was from the Trent at Cavendish
Bridge, across the fields to this point, across the canal and into the
fields shown here that had already been flooded by the Derwent. These boats
are moored bow-to the offside of the canal, the JCB being on the service
road to the moorings. These 2 views can be related by reference to the
two men and gate in middle distance. The distant buildings are Great Wilne.
The flood gates and banks help prevent flooding of the canal port area,
but some properties were flooded as the pumps were unable to cope with
the various sources of leakage.
