Elm Tree Cottage is at the left hand end of the red barn. Jane and Andrew Leng live in the right hand end. The barn is away from the lane up its own track behind the old farmhouse. Elm Tree Cottage is situated on our land which we have converted to a private nature reserve. We planted over a thousand native trees and shrubs, when we arrived in 1991, and these have now grown into spinneys, we have put up nest- and bat-boxes, and the grassland, which is grazed by our Soay sheep, is becoming increasingly species-rich, so there is abundant wildlife. The barn owl box in the bottom wilderness is usually occupied and can be seen from the edge of the lodges area. We have laid it out with a number of paths to explore; the attached plan shows the layout and also some of the wildlife we have seen. Elm Tree Cottage is within walking distance of Minsmere Bird Reserve and the Coast Path, and walks, starting from the cottage, through marsh, heath and forest. It is also a good base for cycling.
